Well qualified: Harriet runs Hythe Conservation

If you’ve ever broken your favourite piece of pottery or China you will know how heart-breaking that can feel - especially if it has great sentimental value. But fear not as help is now on hand in the form of Hythe Conservation.

Set up in September of last year (2020) by Harriet Sylvester (pictured above), a qualified conservator and restorer, she works on a variety of materials from public and private collections in the UK and abroad.

Working from her studio in Woodbridge she tells us that the company is so-named due to its historic riverside home town. “The name refers to a river landing-place, derived from the Anglo-Saxon word hithe meaning a haven,” says Harriet who is an Associate Member of The Institute of Conservation (ICON).

She certainly has great credentials for the job.

“I have completed an Undergraduate Degree in Conservation and Restoration from the University of Lincoln and have a Masters Degree, specialising in ceramics and glass, from West Dean College of Arts and Conservation. During the course of my studies, I was awarded The British Antique Dealers’ Association Scholarship. I have also gained valuable conservation experience at the Royal Collection Trust and Plowden & Smith.”
