Woodbridge artist wins council commission
Suffolk Coastal District Council writes: "The winning artist has been chosen to bring a new piece of art to Suffolk Coastal’s East Suffolk House.
Suffolk Coastal marked their first year in their new headquarters this week and were looking for a new and exciting piece of art to be displayed in the reception area which reflects Suffolk Coastal as a district, drawing on aspects of the East Suffolk Business Plan and compliments the architecture of the building.
Emma Green who lives locally in Woodbridge has been picked by Suffolk Coastal staff and councillors to create a unique piece of work for the council.
Her paintings explore the coastal landscape in semi-abstract style, emphasising the light and atmosphere of the environment. Much of her work focuses on the River Deben, including the boatyards near her river-side studio.
The council received ideas from 22 artists of which five finalists were chosen to come in and meet the judging panel of staff, councillors and external arts experts who made the ultimate decision.
Emma will now have four months to create the piece of work in her local studio on the river and the new art work is expected to be unveiled next April.
Cllr Geoff Holdcroft, Deputy Leader of Suffolk Coastal, with responsibility for the Accommodation Project, said: “We had a very tough time deciding on the winning idea as we had such a diverse range of entries.
“We’d like to thank all the artists for taking the time to submit their ideas and especially the four finalists who came in for interviews with us.
“The competition has been very exciting for us as it’s brought our attention to sheer amount of skill and talent of artists living in Suffolk Coastal and wish them the best for the future.”
“We wanted to find an exciting piece of work and in return give an artist some recognition for their work and we believe Emma’s new piece will wonderfully complement the building.”
